Can You Give Yourself a Break This Summer?
Like everyone I know I have a long personal to do list: clean the basement, write my first book, transfer the summer clothes to my room (I have no closet), send thank you notes for birthday presents, read the 5 books on my night stand, etc. Then there is the to do list for building my business: write a newsletter, have lunches with former colleagues, ask for referrals, get more training, etc. The list could be endless, when I am driving I think of things as well and they don't get on the list because I can't drive and write at the same time. So, I have decided to shorten the lists and be gentle with myself this summer. I don't get my three month vacation anymore, but I can give myself a break from endless lists.

I would like to challenge you to do the same. There is always more to do, but what would happen if you did less? And what if you really practiced being purposeful and present in everything you do. My trainer has this saying when exercise gets too hard, think of the sacred pause and ask yourself: What are you afraid of? What will happen if you do this? In the same vein, I want to propose that you use the sacred pause for the many things you do everyday so you can practice living in the present. Forget all the things you have on the list, enjoy the things you are doing right now. I practiced it this past weekend when my son wanted to play on his new water slide. I needed to hang the photos on the walls that were just painted, but then I thought: What will happen if I don't hang the photos? Nothing. I am setting the deadline, no one else. So, I sprayed my son with the water hose and laughed with him the backyard for an hour. A memory was made.

So this summer:

  • What can you put off your list until the fall?
  • What would happen if you gave yourself a break?
  • How can you stay in the present moment?
  • Practice the sacred pause and enjoy what you are doing right now.
  • Celebrate your successes - don't just cross them off the list!

I know we all can't take three month vacations, but we can be more gentle to ourselves. I can tell you my to do list is only half a page now and I am practicing to keep it that way.

Let me know how you do.

What do I do now?

Using all the tools I learned working in strategic communications for elected officials, non-profit organizations and the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, as well as my training as a professional coach, certified retreat leader and facilitator, I work with individuals, groups and organizations to help them focus on clear goals and measured outcomes. As a professional coach I help individuals create strategic plans for their lives and I help executives become better managers and leaders. As a retreat leader, I design and lead custom retreats for individuals and organizations focused on what they want to achieve. As a facilitator, I am a neutral leader guiding organizations through their meetings and strategic planning sessions and asking questions to deepen the value of the event.
