Making Time for Yourself
Do you have a routine for yourself?
My best friend always told me: "There are two types of people in the world: motorboats and sailboats. Now that we are almost into March, I need to ask you? Have you kept your New Year's resolutions? Are you doing everything you need to do to keep yourself whole?"

I can answer the questions for myself. No, I am not. At the beginning of the year, I promised myself I would write 40 minutes a day four days a week so I could complete my novel about adoption. So many people ask me about my experience adopting two little boys that I decided I want to write a novel about how my character decides to adopt and what she goes through to make it happen. Although, it is important to me to get it done, I have only written part of a chapter. The day slips by - the painters come to the house, it snows and I shovel, I return email, I pay bills, and all of a sudden it's 2:30 and I have to get ready to pick up my son from school. Despite this, I have made one commitment that I have kept because I made it a routine – I work out 5 days a week and I always find time for that. So how do I find the time for writing?

Two of my clients gave me the answer. My clients were making time for their work and their obligations but not making the time for things that were fun or things they needed to do to keep their businesses complete, so I said: "schedule it on your calendar and create the environment for you to complete the task." And then I realized I needed to do the same thing for me. I make the time for working out because I get up at 5:30 am and I am back when everyone is eating breakfast. I have scheduled 9:00 am to 9:40, 40 minutes a day for writing but the time has not worked yet. I am too distracted with daily tasks, so I realized it's not just the schedule but it's creating the environment to make it happen. So here I sit at 6:00am and the house is quiet. I think I just found my ideal time to write. Maybe I need to work out at 9:00am and write at 6:00am? So I need to ask you:

  • What can you do this month that is just for you?
  • How can you create a routine around the things you love/need to do?
  • What kind of environment/ritual do you need to create to make it happen?
  • How will you feel once you have done it regularly?

I know how I feel. I feel better just writing this note this morning while everyone in the house is sleeping. What’s your next step?

“It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing. It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive...”
